Shea Berkley started out writing nonfiction (not so fun) and quickly moved into fiction (totally fun), and knew she'd found her calling. (Her family was thrilled she'd found friends to play with even if they weren't technically real.) She's still pleasantly surprised people are willing to pay to read her stories. Besides writing, her many diversions include kickboxing, reading awesome books and hanging out with her loud and rambunctious family. With five kids (all girls), her biggest job is to make sure the little darlings don't harass the neighbors and then play dumb when the cops come knocking on her door.

*Book Summary*

Rise - The redemption story of a rock star going straight(er) through the love of a good(ish) woman.

Acclaimed literary biographer Elizabeth Winston writes about long-dead heroes.
So bad-boy rock icon Zander Freedman couldn’t possibly tempt her to write his memoir.
Except the man is a mass of fascinating contradictions–manipulative, honest, gifted, charismatic and morally ambiguous.
In short, everything she seeks in a biography subject.
When in her life will she get another chance to work with a living legend? But saying yes to one temptation soon leads to another.
Suddenly she’s having heated fantasies about her subject, fantasies this blue-eyed devil is only too willing to stoke.
She thought self-control was in her DNA; after all, she grew up a minister’s daughter.
She thought wrong.

Rock star Zander Freedman has been an outlier–many would say an outcast–for most of his life.
But there’s no disaster he can’t overcome, from the breakup of his band to the inevitable damage to his reputation.
His Resurrection Tour is shaping up to be his greatest triumph–if his golden voice holds out.
Contracting a respected biographer is simply about creating more buzz. Elizabeth’s integrity is the key to consolidating his legacy as one of rock’s greats.
All the damn woman has to do is write down what he tells her. Not force him to think.
Or encourage the good guy struggling to get out.
And certainly not make him fall in love for the first time in his life.
Turns out he is scared of something: being known.

My rating:

Well, well.. this was such a pleasant surprise! This is what I call good writing, people!

First, I want to thank my friend Iva for recommending me the book. She said that the banter between the MCs reminded her of our favorite Connor and Rose from Kiss the Sky, so of course I wanted to check it out. Besides, who doesn’t love a good flirt-fight? ;)

Now, where to begin? Maybe from the thing that I noticed first and the thing that completely seized my attention from the start and that is – great writing. Romance novels are full of tropes and clichés and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to stumble upon those really good ones. To me, Rise truly stands out: it has flawed characters, witty dialogues, interesting plot, AND intelligent bantering and sexual tension between the two main characters – Elizabeth and Zander, is off the charts.

Moreover, what I particularly liked about Rise is the fact it’s not your typical rock-star romance. Other characters are well-developed and thumbs up for additional female characters who have their own sub-plots! Go Dimity, Stormy & Kayla!

Aaaaand, I saved the best for last – Zander Freedman. That. Man. He’s arrogant, irresponsible, selfish, but he’s also playful, sensual and captivating.

Zander vanished into the dark. Seconds later a vocal note, as menacing as dragon-smoke, rose and curled like a helix around the instrumentals. A spotlight flared and he appeared, arms raised, stance wide, his face seared white. And still that note soared…

Scenes where Zander was described performing brought images of Jared Leto singing Hurricane to my mind. Ah, a girl can dream.

Furthermore, I’m so happy I discovered this author. I’ve never heard of Karina Bliss before, but after Rise I’ll be definitely checking out her other books!

Overall, if you want to read a sexy and intelligent romance, devoid of adolescent angst, I’d highly recommend this book!

PS: I’m also so happy that there will be more books in the series dealing with other characters. I can’t wait for Dimity’s story. She’s badass!
PPS: That memoir In Bed with a Rock God, I’d sooo read it.

MM Contemporary Romance

Synopsis On Goodreads:

When a man is consumed by hatred, is there anything left to love?

After a tough day of counseling sessions, Anglican priest Mark Webber is looking forward to a relaxing dinner at a local restaurant. When he sees who’s bellied up to the bar, though, he reaches for his cell phone to call the police.

It’s Lucas Cain, the man who killed Mark’s brother three years ago. Apparently he’s out of jail and hanging out with his old crowd, which has to be a breach of parole, right?

Pulled over upon leaving the bar, Lucas blows a clean breathalyzer and hopes this isn’t a harbinger of things to come. He’s ready to build a sober, peaceful life. His friends aren’t ready to let him move on, though, and he ends up taking refuge in an Anglican half-way house.

Thrown together, Mark and Lucas find common ground in the struggle to help a young gay man come to terms with his sexuality—and the fight against homophobic townsfolk. As attraction grows, the past is the last stumbling block between them and a future filled with hope.

Warning: Bad boys being good, good boys being bad.

*** REVIEW ***

~ Arc provided via Netgalley by Samhain Publishing in exchange for honest review ~

Don't be misled by the synopsis, because this is not your typical mm contemporary romance about Anglican priest falling for ex prisoner. This story is so much more than that. Above all it's about acting reckless and immature and unintentionally making that one mistake and then dealing with the consequences til' the rest of your life. It's about forgiveness, sacrifice, faith and discrimination. It's about the bonds of family and friendship, and yes it's about love, an unlikely type of love which catches off guard both of the MCs when they are at the very bottom.

"It had felt like Lucas was being swept along in a powerful river and he'd reached out to grab hold of Mark, standing safely on the bank. But Lucas hadn't wanted to be rescued, he'd wanted to pull Mark into the current with him."

No one would have ever thought that people like Mark and Lucas could ever fall in love considering their background. An Anglican priest to fall in love with his worse nightmare and the person he hates the most? Impossible, right? I was really intrigued and to be honest skeptic after I read the synopsis about how the author is going to pull this through and I ended up pleasantly surprised. The author did a great job in my opinion in introducing and making acceptable a type of relationship upon which most of the people would frowned upon in real life.

The romance was excruciating slow-building and I think it was the smart and right way to approach to this sensitive subject. The story introduces us to the MCs at first separately and later on intertwines their life paths yet again. Once you get to know the characters it's impossible not to sympathize with the things they've been through and the things they are still going through. The story had me on the brink of tears at times, especially when it comes to Lucas, the ex prisoner whose life it seems ended even before it began and I don't think that anyone will stay indifferent to his story.

Religion and faith also present an important part of this book, mainly with the views of Anglican church regarding homosexuality, but many of the points explored here can apply to any type of religion (btw. for those who aren't familiar with anglicism- Anglican church approves homosexuality and Anglican priests can get married and have either heterosexual or homosexual relationships.) I'm a fairly religious person, but not exactly a fan when authors focus too much on church and its views in my books. It didn't bothered me here, because I felt that the author made some interesting and intelligent points important for the progress and understanding of the story and its characters.

"Anglicanism, in its structures, theology and forms of worship, is commonly understood as a distinct Christian tradition representing a middle ground between what are perceived to be the extremes of the claims of 16th-century Roman Catholicism and the Lutheran and Reformed varieties of Protestantism of that era. As such, it is often referred to as being a via media (or "middle way") between these traditions." (Wikipedia)

My favorite secondary character was definitely the witty, charming and simply adorable 16 years old boy Alex who brought a fair dose of humor to the story and who was also at times the only voice of reason despite his age and lack of experience when the grown-ups started acting immature. I would love to read a book with him as the MC.

"And you were spraying me on purpose? I just thought you had the world's worst aim with a hose?"
"Ah, Luke," Alex said loftily. "You are so innocent."

Bitter-sweet, touching and thought-provoking.

You can forgive, but can you really forget and move on ? Buy the book and find out. This was my first book by K. Sherwood, but definitely not the last. Highly recommended!

*** REVIEW ***

"Once there was a king without a kingdom."

This book is about my favorite Frenchman and the king of the underground kink kingdom- Kingsley Edge and therefore it had the potential to dethrone my favorite book of this series - The Prince (OS, #3), but it didn't. Don't get me wrong- I liked it a lot if not even loved it, but there were still some things that kept me from rating it 5 stars. Let's start with the things that make this series one of the best dark erotica books out there for me:

Dark, edgy, bitter sweet and way too hot story delivered by beautiful, captivating writing. Tiffany Reisz remains one of the best authors I read lately.

The most charming and hottest king/ prince/ switch, you name it, of the OS series. This book has only confirmed yet again why he is my favorite character. This is the story about him building his kingdom- the 8th Circle and the people who helped him in the process. It was Kingsley at his worse- meaning Kingsley at his best. ;)

“I’m French,” Kingsley said. “I’m asking about your religion.” “That is my religion.”

~ The story of King and his sadist Priest. These two had me hot and bothered with their "so close no matter how far" relationship ever since I read The Prince. It's funny, because as you already know I don't even like Søren, but somehow when he's with Kingsley I might say that I even...not like him, but found him bearable. I lived, cherished and breathed for every moment between these two while reading and those are my favorite moments of the book.

~ Smoking hot Rolls Royce sex scene featuring...guess who? *_* No, my lips are sealed- read the book and find out. All I'm going to say is- thank you, Mistress Reisz from the bottom of my dirty mind.

The reasons why The Prince is still my No. 1 Original Sinners book:

~ "The polyamory" is still something I find hard accepting and that will probably never change. I find this series despite that addicting, but I don't see myself reading more books with this type of relationship in the future, but who knows, you know what they say- never say never.

~ I wanted hoped this installment will be focused more on Kingsley's & Søren's relationship just like in The Prince, even though my friends who read this book said that it's not and sadly they were right.

~ I also hoped thought that this is going to be mainly mm book, but it wasn't. I guess I forgot the fact that Kingsley is bisexual, but either way I found his mm relationships more interesting than his f/m relationships.

~ There were some parts I felt the story was dragging and some moments I could have easily gone without.

All in all, this was another very good installment in the OS series and I'm sure that the fans, especially the Kingsley harem will be more than pleased.

"Vive le roi."

At five p.m I was starving. After just the muesli bar for breakfast, I’d skipped lunch to avoid a potential repeat of this morning, which meant my stomach had jumped into full riot mode. Nervous about facing my fellow students, I pulled my big girl panties up and marched myself to the dining hall. It was early, so I wasn’t all that brave, if I were being totally honest with myself. The place should have been near empty.

There were half a dozen people in the common room, watching some crappy reality television show. I scooted around the back of the seats and up into the dining hall. Dinner smelled delicious—burgers—if my senses served me right.

Twirling my meal card around my fingers, I strolled right up to the servery and stood in line. The girl in front of me turned and I tossed a confident smile her way. She smiled back. The line wasn’t moving yet as dinner hadn’t officially started, but people began flowing in, increasing the number of voices in the room. I swiped my clammy hands on my jeans. This was the first time in more than a year that I’d come down to dinner alone. Generally I came with Christian and being alone was a little daunting. It was all cool, though. Savvy should turn up soon, then I wouldn’t look like a loner. She never responded to this morning’s text and I hadn’t seen her since Saturday night, but that wasn’t uncommon if she’d hooked up with a guy. Especially with how busy I’d be this year. She knew my Sundays were reserved for study, so she didn’t usually bother me then, and today we’d been at classes. Still, it was a little weird. She could have at least called to chat about Christian, surely she knew like everyone else.

My tummy grumbled like a truck moving at high speed. I glanced at the clock; it read five-thirty p.m. The line started moving, thank the lord. I glanced over my shoulder, and surprisingly the line curled all the way around the edge of the hall. Everyone had to be famished tonight, not just me.

I kept my eyes to the front and walked through the servery where I built my own burger: meat, egg, tomato, beetroot, no lettuce, and a slathering of tomato sauce—perfect. As I emerged out the other side, my gaze slid over the line, looking for someone who might join me, and the weirdest thing happened. Not a soul met my gaze. It was like they all deliberately looked the other way, or were engrossed in such deep conversation that they didn’t see me.

I’d never had problems with friends. People just … well … they liked me. It had always been that way. I liked everyone, and they all liked me back.

My tummy churned for reasons not associated with hunger. What the heck had I done wrong? I walked over to one of the many empty tables and set my tray down, then flicked my phone out of my pocket and pretended to check my texts. Savvy had replied and I’d missed it.

Sorry I missed breakfast. Catch you at dinner.

A string of girls who I knew—we’d all been freshers together last year—walked right past me, talking softly as if they thought I couldn’t hear, but when people are talking about you, it’s not hard to tell. And those girls were most definitely doing just that. The glances my way every few seconds were a dead giveaway when everyone else in the room was deliberately avoiding my gaze.

I ducked my head, and studied my phone again. Whatever was going on, it was weird. I was the captain of Oxley’s hockey team, netball team, in the social committee, and even campaigning for the university’s student council. I had lots of friends.

Savannah’s giggle sounded like it came from somewhere behind me. Thank gosh. I really needed to talk to her and figure out what was happening. The whispers and stares, the fresher at uni this morning, Dane on Saturday night, sexploits—Oh my gosh. Christian. I glanced over my shoulder, raising my hand to call Savvy over, but my heart dropped into my stomach.

Savvy was attached to Dane’s hip. Her arm hung around his waist and his rested on her shoulders. Christian walked in step with them and the two guys wore massive grins. I hadn’t seen Christian that happy since … well, since I couldn’t remember. I suppose now that I thought about it, lately he’d been kind of cranky and tired. Always tired.

I swung back around in my seat, hoping they hadn’t seen me, and there someone had sat in the chair opposite me: the tool from this morning. He stared like I was some porn star he’d just paid to watch. And he smelled like a brewery; not to mention his eyes looked a little glassy.

Those same eyes locked on my mine and he placed his flattened palm on his chest like he was about to dive headfirst into a heartfelt apology. Which frankly, he owed me. His hand circled over his left pec, going for his heart, but then it moved to the other side and—ohmygod did he just tweak his nipple? My heart pounded a little faster and I glanced away. The entire dining hall looked at us. But he was like a train wreck. I couldn’t stop my gaze sliding back. His hand trailed down his chest and disappeared under the table in the general direction of his groin. He moaned, then his arm started moving slow at first and increasing in speed, all the while his dark eyes held my gaze. Then the crazy guy rolled his eyes back in his head and yelled, “Yes. Aaa—aa—ash. Yes!”

Someone clapped.

He arched his back. What in hell’s name was this freak doing? It was like that old nineties movie where the chick faked an orgasm in the middle of a café, except this was some dude in the centre of the Oxley College dining hall and I wasn’t entirely sure he was faking it.

Spent, he flopped in the seat, his arms hanging beside it, then snapped his head forward again and his face split in a stupid grin as he pushed his chair back, placed an arm across his waist, and freaking bowed.

Everyone laughed.

The whole room full of people thought this idiot was funny.

I couldn’t move. It was as if the air had frozen around me and I was a statue unable to even blink.

“My impersonation of the one and only Olivia Dean,” he shouted, loud enough for the whole room to hear.

Couldn’t the ground just open up and swallow me already? My cheeks burned so hot they should have caught fire. Blood rushed past my ears so loud that I couldn’t hear anything; my stomach lurched.

I was going to throw up.

I needed to get out of there, right now. Whatever held me in place snapped free. I shot to my feet and high-tailed it out of the dining hall, past a million staring faces. The common room was no more than fuzz at the edge of my periphery, Front Courtyard much the same. I cut across the back of block F and made a beeline for K, then darted up the stairs and into my room.

Whatever was going down, it looked like I was the centre of a joke I didn’t find funny or nice.

After finishing Burned (Fever, #7) by K. M. Moning I've realized how much I missed and kind of neglected one of my favorites, if not No. 1 favorite genre- urban fantasy/pnr romance. Since I've been seeing praising reviews of this new series a lot lately on both GR and Twitter, I decided to give it a shot.

It turned out that the story is not only a mix of urban fantasy and pnr romance, but also of mythology and dystopia with the setting in a post-apocalyptic world with polluted land and waters, increasing illegal human organs trafficking and therefore decreasing number of people. Add to that mythological creatures like Ferries and Kers or so called "servants of fate." Basically, Kers are the ones who mark people when their time has come and then Ferries help them cross over, either to heaven or hell. There are even more powerful players who are in charge of both Ferries and Kers, but you'll find out more about them if you decide to read this book.

Sounds interesting, right? Well, to be honest, it took me awhile to get into this story. I saw the potential in the idea of the plot right away, but I wasn't exactly impressed with the way the story was introduced. Why is that? Well, it's mainly because the story was more character- and romance-driven in the beginning with some info about the post-apocalyptic setting, but not enough to satisfy my curiosity. Even now, after finishing it, I have many questions about the world-building which I hope will be answered in the next installment.

The MCs, the paramedics Cacy and Eli were likable, but not enough to not be overshadowed by some of the secondary characters, at least for me. One of the things which could also have been better in my opinion is the romance. K. M. Moning, Ilona Andrews and Nalini Singh got me hooked on romances full of witty banter, tension and passion and I couldn't not notice how the romance here wasn't on the same level. While it was slow-building with some push and pull drama, it was also insta-tish and I'm not exactly a fan of that type of romance.

The most intriguing secondary character was definitely the mysterious and edgy Lord of the Kere and keeper of souls- Moros and later on his creepy sisters of Fate, but we meet them at the very end, in the epilogue. The story was dark, action-packed, suspenseful and steamy and the writing was goodThe best parts for me were the last 30 % of the book where the most action and twists happened and where the biggest secrets came to light and where everything I found lacking in the beginning improved drastically.

All in all- for me, this was a 3 I-like-you-but-I-expect-more-from-you-in-the-future stars read. I think that the story has potential and hope that that potential will be fully achieved in the next installment.

She doesn't want their strong friendship to be ruined, but her feelings for him grow, and Lorena knows she can't stay away. But a night of seduction and forbidden pleasure changes everything.

Betrayal will not be tolerated and long-standing friendships will be broken.
